Ash Wednesday, the first day of the “penitential season” of Lent, derives its name from the custom of penitent sinners “sitting in dust and ashes.” Although not practiced here, the tradition of placing ashes on the forehead during the worship service is an outward symbol of inner repentance. As we gather this evening to confess our sins to God, we do so in humility and confidence that He, in turn, will reassure us of His forgiveness – heard in His gracious Word and given in the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.
