7th Grade Spotlight
A Camp Experience Students Never Forget
Each spring, St. Matthew’s 7th graders head to Camp Phillip in Wautoma for an overnight adventure that blends outdoor fun, faith, and personal growth. From geocaching and games to sing-alongs and Bible studies with camp staff, every moment is packed with hands-on learning and lasting memories.
Students step outside their comfort zones on the high ropes course and zip line—building confidence, perseverance, and a strong sense of accomplishment along the way. With no phones or screens in sight, they deepen friendships, sharpen teamwork skills, and enjoy meaningful time together in God’s creation.
This special trip has become a rite of passage for our 7th grade class—and one they’ll remember for years to come.

Survival Quarter
Survival Quarter is an exciting, hands-on unit designed to give our eighth-grade students a taste of real-life adult responsibilities. Through engaging simulations, students gain valuable skills and knowledge they’ll carry into the future.
Overview
Survival Quarter covers practical life skills in areas such as:
- Resume Writing and Job Interviews
- Stock Market Basics
- Managing Checking Accounts
- Understanding Health and Life Insurance
- Navigating Real Estate and Home Loans
- Learning About Wills and Living Wills
- Filing Income Taxes
How It Works
At the start of Survival Quarter, students dive into the world of employment. They’ll create resumes, apply for “jobs” at school, and even go through interviews with volunteer “bosses” from our church community. Just like in real life, jobs are not guaranteed, adding a level of realism to the process. Throughout the unit, guest speakers introduce new topics, guiding students through simulations that bring each concept to life.
This unique 8-week program, held each February and March, helps students develop an appreciation for adult responsibilities, empowering them with skills that will benefit them for years to come.

Chapel Buddies
Each year, older students are paired with younger ones through our Chapel Buddy program. Chapel buddies attend school-wide chapel services together twice a month and often connect for fun activities throughout the year. Each year, students are paired with new chapel buddies, building friendships across grade levels.
Cardinal Flocks
Another way we foster a sense of community is through Cardinal Flocks. These are mixed-age groups of students from all grades who meet about six times a year to work on service projects or enjoy team-building activities together. Cardinal Flocks create a supportive environment where students can learn from each other and develop friendships with peers of all ages.
Annual Events
Annual events like Spirit Week and the All-School Kickball Tournament add to the fun, fostering a school culture where students know, support, and enjoy each other.
